This Weekend, Nov 16-18

Well, last weekend turned out to be a bust for this Fort Worth Family Fun blogger -- in spite of having a list of things I wanted to go do, the entire family stayed home and did laundry for 5 hours. Ahhh, family togetherness -- not exactly what I had in mind!!

The events are slowing down this weekend, due to the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. Be assured, though, that right after Thanksgiving, things will pick up and be full speed ahead as we will officially be in the holiday season!

FRIDAY, November 16

1. Frozen Turkey Drive. If you want to encourage your family to be generous this Thanksgiving, here's a good opportunity to give a frozen turkey to be used for a family in need. Look for the Tarrant Area Food Bank truck and the turkey carrying a protest sign. They will also accept cash donations; a gift of $20 will feed a family of four.
Place: Downtown Fort Worth, in front of Capital One, 505 Main Street. Time: Friday November 16, 2007 7:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Cost: As much as you want to give

SATURDAY, November 17

1. Get The Lard Out. I include this one mainly because I love the title of the event. That, and I love the Log Cabin Village. From their website: "Pioneers were the ultimate recyclers! Learn how the philosophy of “Waste Not Want Not” played into the daily life of Texans in the 1800s. Soap-making, butter-churning, candle-dipping, and more will be discussed. You can even dip your own candles to take home! No reservations required. Cost is regular Village admission plus a $3 craft fee."
Place: Log Cabin Village Time: 1-4pm Cost: Village admission plus $3 craft fee

2. Picturing the Bible: The Earliest Christian Art. This one qualifies as an ongoing event, but since it opens on Saturday, I've placed it here. From Nov 18 through March 30, the Kimbell Art Museum will feature early Christian art. From their website: When and where were the first illustrations of the Old and New Testaments created? It had long been believed that there were no Jewish illustrations of the Old Testament in ancient times, in observance of the ban on idolatry. But the discovery in 1932 of the richly decorated narrative frescoes in the third-century synagogue at Dura-Europos (Syria) dramatically changed scholars' views.

Place: Kimbell Art Museum, 3333 Camp Bowie Blvd Time: Museum Hours (see website) Cost: It ain't cheap -- $14 for adults, $10 for ages 6-11, free for under 6. BUT, please note that there is half price admission all day on Tuesdays, and on Fridays from 5-8!!

3. National Adoption Day - Tarrant County. This is a unique event, and I'm not sure that it qualifies really as a family event, unless you are trying to explain to your child about adoption, or if your family is thinking of adoption. But I thought I'd mention it here, because you've never seen such joy in Family Court, and so many new families being created all at once. If you go, take Kleenex. From their website: "Saturday, November 17th is the eighth annual Tarrant County National Adoption Day celebration, with the consummation of approximately 50 adoptions. These precious children will be leaving foster care for safe, permanent and loving families. Eight to ten court rooms are used continuously throughout the morning. Heart Gallery photographs of children who are still waiting will be prominently displayed."
Place: Tarrant County Family Law Center, 200 E. Weatherford. Time: 9am -12pm Cost: FREE
